The group has had some high-profile gigs over those many years\, including performing as the welcoming band for five U.S. Presidents: Richard Nixon\, Ronald Reagan\, Jimmy Carter\, George Bush\, Sr. and George Bush\, Jr.\, and one presidential hopeful\, Ross Perot. The Rochester group was the official Minnesota band at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans. In 2005\, the group was named to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nSTEVE KENNY QUARTET\nSteve Kenny Quartet \nSteve Kenny Quartet is a flexible membership ensemble that focuses on select Original Compositions by Steve Kenny and a number of crowd-pleasing innovative arrangements of Jazz standards. The group has been performing on Twin Cities stages for 5 years\, and has toured the Midwest and appeared on music series at Drake University\, the Eau Clair Jazz festival\, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. The ensemble’s debut Recording – ‘Quartets’ was released in December by illicit Productions\, and will be reissued on the Shifting Paradigm Records label on August 3\, 2019… a few days before the Les Fields Hall performance in Rochester. \nFor the appearance at the Les Fields Hall\, the following core members are scheduled to appear: \nSteve Kenny is active in the Minnesota Jazz community as a Performer\, Composer\, Band Leader\, Producer\, Publisher\, and Curator. He is frequently appearing on various Twin Cities and regional stages while performing in or leading ensembles. He’s prolific as a Jazz composer\, often performing and recording his own original works which have won awards and commissions. Steve is a founding member of ‘the illicit sextet’\, “Group 47”\, “What Would Monk Do?” and his own Quartets\, and he is the creative force behind the production company “illicit Productions”\, which produces well over one hundred live shows a year and has a growing yearly catalog of Jazz CD’s being produced\, released and distributed\, including the successful ‘Twin Cities Jazz Sampler CDs’\, with Volume 3 slated to be released in late 2019. SUMMARY:Jazz in Les Fields Hall: Blue Ox Jazz Babies
DESCRIPTION:During the Castle’s Grand Opening in February 2019\, Castle Community and Threshold Arts dedicated the Castle’s third floor event hall to Les Fields – one of Rochester’s most iconic musicians who has been bringing some of the best jazz musicians in Southeast Minnesota together for more than fifty years. Threshold Arts hosts a monthly series\, Jazz in Les Fields Hall\, featuring Les Fields and the Turkey River All Stars and a visiting guest band. \nDoors open: 1:00 PM\nLes Fields & the Turkey River All Stars: 1:30 PM\nBlue Ox Jazz Babies: 2:40 PM\nAll Ages – General Admission \nTickets: $5 in advance / $8 day of show \n\n\n\n\nLES FIELDS AND THE TURKEY RIVER ALL STARS\nLes Fields & the Turkey River All-Stars \nNamed after the river that ran through his Cresco\, Iowa hometown\, Les organized the Turkey River All Stars Band in 1968. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBLUE OX JAZZ BABIES\nBlue Ox Jazz Babies \nThe Blue Ox Jazz Babies take their name from one of Minnesota’s true legends\, Paul Bunyan and his trusty friend\, Babe the Blue Ox. Although not legends themselves\, the Blue Ox Jazz Babies have become known around Southern Minnesota as true enthusiasts of historical (and sometimes hysterical) music known as Dixieland Jazz. The band does its best to bring Dixieland Jazz from New Orleans all the way up the Mississippi to the Midwest in a way that keeps audiences smiling with a toe-tapping good time. \nTed Schreyer on tuba anchors the band with his upbeat style of tuba playing. Ted has played on “Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keilor and can be heard around Minnesota with several jazz bands. \nDebbie Schreyer (Teds’ sister) grew up playing ragtime and traditional jazz banjo with her banjoist father Lowell\, starting with him at the local Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and appearing with him on the Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen steamboats. A full-time career banjoist including a seven-year engagement at the Show Boat Casino in Atlantic City\, Debbie is an American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame inductee. \nTom Owens met the Schreyers while piloting a riverboat on the Upper Mississippi where the Schreyers were performing. We don’t know if Tom swept Debbie off her feet or if it was the other way around but Debbie and Tom were eventually married. Tom\, having previous experience in musical theater in St. Paul\, has joined the act singing and playing string bass and washboard. \nJimmy Hayes on trombone is a true tail-gate player. He grew up listening to the sounds of Turk Murphy and fell in love with the style. No one knows for sure if Jimmy can read a note but his instincts for rhythm and harmony licks give the band a truly unique sound. \nBarry Clapper on clarinet and soprano sax fills in with harmony parts and also does a nice job of carrying the melody. Barry is well-known throughout the country as a judge of barbershop quartets. This experience with barbershop gives him a wonderful ear for harmony and a flair for entertainment that audiences love. \nTim Robinson on cornet carries the melody that drives the band. Tim’s smooth style and raspy vocals make you feel like you’re sitting in one of the clubs that Louis Armstrong and King Oliver made famous. \nThe band loves to make audiences happy throughout the Midwest. They have appeared at various jazz festivals including The Winona Jazz Festival\, The Doc Evans Jazz Festival\, and The Clear Lake Jazz Festival. They have also appeared at the Minnesota State Fair\, several county fairs\, parades\, riverboats\, and a variety of special occasions. Their first CD which is available today is called “Blue Ox Jazz Babies — Out to Pasture.” \nFor more information visit blueoxjazz.com

In 2005\, the group was named to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\n\n\nJOHN PAULSON QUARTET\nJohn Paulson \nJohn Paulson’s jazz groups are widely known throughout the S.E. Minnesota region and beyond for performing hard hitting swing tunes\, along with gentle ballads and bossa novas.  For their set at The Castle listeners can expect a mix of recognizable jazz standards along with some energetic original compositions reflecting a wide range of styles. \nIn addition to John Paulson on sax and flute\, Dr. Paulson’s quartet for the performance at The Castle May 12th includes the stellar Twin Cities guitarist Scott Gerry;  drummer Miles Johnston- well known throughout the Rochester area; and La Crosse bassist Terry Grosskopf who has performed with a variety of professional jazz groups in the region plus touring with the Guy Lombardo orchestra. \nJohn Paulson started his musical journey in Rochester\, MN when he began playing sax at age 10.  He fondly remembers attending many teen dances at the Rochester Armory which is now The Castle. His interest led to playing in area rock bands as well as continuing with school music groups. He eventually migrated west and got his B.M and M.M from the University of Utah and later completed his DMA in music education from the University of Washington.  He studied flute and clarinet with members of the Utah Symphony and the L.A. Chamber Orchestra and studied jazz improvisation with Garry Dial in New York. After 35 years of full time teaching\, Dr. Paulson retired from Saint Mary’s University and taught part at Winona State for the last 5 years. As a freelance artist\, he has performed with The Cab Calloway Orchestra\, Mel Torme\, Andy Williams\, Bob Hope\, The Temptations\, Johnny Mathis\, Pioneer Memorial Theatre and The Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City. He is widely published and has produced 5 jazz quintet CDs and 2 big band recordings of his own music.  The 2nd John Paulson Big Band CD “Five Years On” was just selected as one of the top 10 big band CD’s of 2018 by KBEM-FM jazz radio in Mpls.  Much of this music was performed by the JP Big Band at Mayo High in Rochester marking 50 years since he graduated from his alma mater. \nVisit paulsonjazz.com for more information.
