SUMMARY:Jazz in Les Fields Hall: Blue Ox Jazz Babies
DESCRIPTION:During the Castle’s Grand Opening in February 2019\, Castle Community and Threshold Arts dedicated the Castle’s third floor event hall to Les Fields – one of Rochester’s most iconic musicians who has been bringing some of the best jazz musicians in Southeast Minnesota together for more than fifty years. Threshold Arts hosts a monthly series\, Jazz in Les Fields Hall\, featuring Les Fields and the Turkey River All Stars and a visiting guest band. \nDoors open: 1:00 PM\nLes Fields & the Turkey River All Stars: 1:30 PM\nBlue Ox Jazz Babies: 2:40 PM\nAll Ages – General Admission \nTickets: $5 in advance / $8 day of show \n\n\n\n\nLES FIELDS AND THE TURKEY RIVER ALL STARS\nLes Fields & the Turkey River All-Stars \nNamed after the river that ran through his Cresco\, Iowa hometown\, Les organized the Turkey River All Stars Band in 1968. The group has had some high-profile gigs over those many years\, including performing as the welcoming band for five U.S. Presidents: Richard Nixon\, Ronald Reagan\, Jimmy Carter\, George Bush\, Sr. and George Bush\, Jr.\, and one presidential hopeful\, Ross Perot. The Rochester group was the official Minnesota band at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans. In 2005\, the group was named to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nBLUE OX JAZZ BABIES\nBlue Ox Jazz Babies \nThe Blue Ox Jazz Babies take their name from one of Minnesota’s true legends\, Paul Bunyan and his trusty friend\, Babe the Blue Ox. Although not legends themselves\, the Blue Ox Jazz Babies have become known around Southern Minnesota as true enthusiasts of historical (and sometimes hysterical) music known as Dixieland Jazz. The band does its best to bring Dixieland Jazz from New Orleans all the way up the Mississippi to the Midwest in a way that keeps audiences smiling with a toe-tapping good time. \nTed Schreyer on tuba anchors the band with his upbeat style of tuba playing. Ted has played on “Prairie Home Companion” with Garrison Keilor and can be heard around Minnesota with several jazz bands. \nDebbie Schreyer (Teds’ sister) grew up playing ragtime and traditional jazz banjo with her banjoist father Lowell\, starting with him at the local Shakey’s Pizza Parlor and appearing with him on the Delta Queen and Mississippi Queen steamboats. A full-time career banjoist including a seven-year engagement at the Show Boat Casino in Atlantic City\, Debbie is an American Banjo Museum Hall of Fame inductee. \nTom Owens met the Schreyers while piloting a riverboat on the Upper Mississippi where the Schreyers were performing. We don’t know if Tom swept Debbie off her feet or if it was the other way around but Debbie and Tom were eventually married. Tom\, having previous experience in musical theater in St. Paul\, has joined the act singing and playing string bass and washboard. \nJimmy Hayes on trombone is a true tail-gate player. He grew up listening to the sounds of Turk Murphy and fell in love with the style. No one knows for sure if Jimmy can read a note but his instincts for rhythm and harmony licks give the band a truly unique sound. \nBarry Clapper on clarinet and soprano sax fills in with harmony parts and also does a nice job of carrying the melody. Barry is well-known throughout the country as a judge of barbershop quartets. This experience with barbershop gives him a wonderful ear for harmony and a flair for entertainment that audiences love. \nTim Robinson on cornet carries the melody that drives the band. Tim’s smooth style and raspy vocals make you feel like you’re sitting in one of the clubs that Louis Armstrong and King Oliver made famous. \nThe band loves to make audiences happy throughout the Midwest. They have appeared at various jazz festivals including The Winona Jazz Festival\, The Doc Evans Jazz Festival\, and The Clear Lake Jazz Festival. They have also appeared at the Minnesota State Fair\, several county fairs\, parades\, riverboats\, and a variety of special occasions. Their first CD which is available today is called “Blue Ox Jazz Babies — Out to Pasture.” \nFor more information visit blueoxjazz.com

In 2005\, the group was named to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLASONYA NATIVIDAD\nLasonya Natividad \nLaSonya Natividad is a Rochester Minnesota based vocal artist hailing from the great state of Louisiana. Her unique sound is a blend of southern gospel and jazz influences. She has vocal range from mezzo soprano to contralto. Some of her vocal influences include the God Mother of Jazz Ella Fitzgerald\, Etta James\, India Arie\, Jill Scott and Mahalia Jackson \nShe received her music beginning in the church at age six; and singing her first solo in the 3rd grade: THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER. She went on to sing in high school in the school choir and for competition in both the girl’s vocal and chorus categories on the regional and state level earning her a superior rating and scholarships to LSU in music. \nLittle know fact is she dabbled in playing the bass clarinet and bass drum (it’s all about that bass) in high school  for concert and marching band respectively. Senior year she was granted the mantel of drum major. \nShe continued singing in various community gospel choirs at the local level until college where she took a break from singing except for special occasions to focus on establishing her medical career. \nFinally In 2003 she moved to Rochester Minnesota where she could get back to her first love\, of singing where it all began\, back in church where she became the praise and worship leader and choir director of Vision Church. Shortly thereafter\, she began singing for charity events where she caught the attention of a local musician and owner of Spectrum Audio\, Daniel Van Hook who encouraged her year after year to get involved in the local music scene while providing sound guidance at many of the charity events she sang. \nPerhaps  her fastest move wasn’t soon enough because he took it upon himself to introduce her to Mike King a local guitarist by bringing him to one of her performances.  And the rest is history…She went on to sing for competition in Rochester’s Got Talent competition in 2009 earning her 1st runner up and becoming the leading lady with the Jazz Ensemble of 2 O’clock jump whose members include Mike Sloane\, Mike King\, Dave Townsend and Miles Johnston. \nShe made her solo debut with a trio from 2 o’clock jump at Canadian Honker Restaurant. The following year she partnered with the talented Maurice Toussaint for the annual Juneteenth Festival where they both caught the eye of the band leader of KnuFunk Doug Porter.  Later that same year\, she collaborated with Doug and Maurice for a stellar performance at the NAACP annual fundraiser banquet. Their love of music kept them together reigniting the band KnuFunk where she has gone on to perform at countless venues in Rochester and surrounding areas. \nShe has collaborated with many of the amazingly talented artist in SE Minnesota area including Annie Mack\, Alex Rossi\, John Sievers of the D’Sievers\, Suite\, Dianna Parks\, After School Special and many others. Most recently\, she collaborated with timeless band Incognito to honor the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Tony Fuel recording her first musical solo project with his deep Soul house music sounds.

The outcome of this fusion is hard-hitting dance music and high-energy live shows. Each player works tirelessly outside McNasty Brass Band as a side-man\, some with national and international touring acts. That’s what makes McNasty special– these youthful but experienced side-men come together and showcase their compositions\, solos\, group vocals\, and stage presence as front-men. “McNasty Brass Band is a perfect example of why you shouldn’t make fun of the kid who is super into trumpet in 5th grade” (twincitiesmedia.net). “King Size Life\,” their first studio album (available January 27\, 2017)\, encapsulates their live energy with exciting compositions\, rowdy gang vocals\, and rip-roaring solos. The only thing missing is their dance moves! \n  \n\n\n\nWatch\n \n\n\nListen\n \n\n\n\nFuzzy Math\n \n5:30-6:30 p.m. \nFuzzy Math is a Twin Cities-based group offering an eclectic mix of original jazz and creative pop covers…something for everyone. Founder\, composer and keyboardist Mark Vandermyde started migrating from Mozart to Miles in middle school\, studied composition at Harvard\, and assembled a group of top-notch musicians to bring to life his vision of creating tunes that are interesting\, accessible and fun; serious music that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The group was named to the StarTribune’s Best of Minnesota list (“Best Jazz Act For People Bored With Jazz”) and recently released their third CD “Dreamers Drive”. Joining the group for the Rochester City Jazz Fest are staples of the metro music scene Aaron Hedenstrom on saxophone\, Eric Graham on bass and Haralds Bondaris on drums. \nLinks: \n\nwww.fuzzymath.band\nwww.facebook.com/fuzzymathjazz\nwww.cdbaby.com/cd/fuzzymath13\n\n  \n\n\n\nListen\n \n\n\nListen\n \n\n\n\nKevin Clements\, bass\, and Dave Hagedorn\, vibes\n \n4-5:00 p.m. \nKevin and Dave met in 1997 in Northfield\, MN\, and have been playing jazz together ever since. The combination of vibes and bass is a unique one\, and interesting to both jazz aficionados as well as those not as familiar with the jazz tradition. \nKevin is a retired Northwest Airlines pilot\, who made a living in a previous life (before getting his wings)\, playing bass in places like Dallas\, Texas\, and Kona\, Hawaii. Dave is the jazz band director at St. Olaf College\, and performs all over the Twin Cities metro area with a variety of different groups and genres. \nThe duo has played annually at the summer Bridge Chamber Festival in Northfield\, at venues such as St. Olaf College\, Carleton College and the Grand Theater.
