DESCRIPTION:In a world where words like “legend” get thrown around entirely too lightly\, it’s good to know that there are a few people still worthy of the word’s original intent. And when it comes to music in Iowa\, Joe Price stands as one of the art’s legendary practitioners. \nArmed with a joyous\, disarming demeanor and the ability to play the doors off most anyone else in the room\, Price has opened for the likes of Iris Dement and John Lee Hooker\, while Iowa’s own Greg Brown calls Price “the Buddha.” Brown isn’t alone in his praise\, as a litany of Iowa musicians list Price as one of their influences. \nPrice’s reputation was cemented in the 1970’s\, when he spent the latter half of the decade as part of Mother Blues\, one of the greatest and most heavily influential Iowa blues bands of all time. It was a time when Price was playing nearly non-stop\, and developed the style that has made him such a memorable performer. \nAnd make no mistake\, Price certainly is memorable. Head down while he plays\, big ball cap covering his eyes from the crowd while he plies his trade\, feet tapping out the time as his hands work those six strings like their on autopilot. Price isn’t the kind of artist you “think” you’ve seen play; once you’ve been taken to church by that slide\, it stays with you. \nBut no man lives by bread alone\, and Price has two great loves in his life. It’s the rare man that gets to mix two passions together and make a life out of it\, but Vicki Price makes that easy. The pair married in 1987\, but Vicki had been holding her own in the wilds of small-town Iowa before then. Her guitar playing has more structure to it than Joe’s\, while her voice provides a good deal of their songs fire. \nBold and brassy when she wants to be\, Vicki’s voice has elicited visions of Loretta Lynn or June Carter\, but she’s able to get far bluesier than any of her most obvious comparisons. This duo is far more than the sum of their impressive parts: it is when these two take the stage together that the genuine magic happens. \nJoe’s deep love and admiration for his wife is obvious from the moment she joins him on stage—something that can happen at any point during a set; he beckons her with “You Are My Sunshine”—and the amount of fun they clearly have performing with one another elevates their performances\, transforming them from something that blues purists and guitar fans can appreciate\, into something that everyone with ears and a love of life can understand and tap along to. \nJoe and Vicki are both members of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. Their 2009 album “Rain or Shine” won the Independent Music Award for best Blues CD of the year. Joe is also a member of the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was a finalist in the International Blues Challenge. \nThe couple released a slew of solo CD’s on seminal Iowa label Trailer Records\, including “25 Below” (Joe\, 1996)\, “Mississippi Summer” (Vicki\, 1998)\, “Request” (Joe\, 1999)\, “Designated Drive” (Joe\, 2000) and “Looking for Love” (Vicki\, 2005). After Trailer closed up shop\, the pair released 2008’s “A Brand New Place” and 2009’s “Rain or Shine” independently. The latter two albums were both lavished with critical praise\, but the pair may have just saved their best work for their most recent album\, “Night Owls.” Featuring both Joe and Vicki throughout\, “Night Owls” is the Price’s music at its fullest\, most memorable and most fun. \nWhether you are seeing them for the first time or the 100th\, whether it’s live or via one of their albums\, experiencing Joe and Vicki Price is an experience worth having\, worth sharing\, and easy to love. SUMMARY:Killer Queen at Mayo Civic Center
DESCRIPTION:Killer Queen formed back in 1993. Their first public shows were at London University\, following in the footsteps of the real Queen who had played their first shows there 21 years earlier. By 1995 Killer Queen’s UK popularity had grown to such an extent they secured a residency in London’s Strand Theatre attracting nationwide BBC coverage – the first tribute to have a show in the West End. \nThe band’s reputation continued to grow both in the UK and abroad. In 1999\, they returned from a tour of Europe and Russia for an awards ceremony in Leicester Square\, hosted by Suggs from Madness. He announced they had won the award for “Worldwide Best Tribute Band.” \nQueen’s music is loved the world over. Their songs have inspired generations. Recreating the songs on a world stage takes a great deal of skill and Killer Queen’s musicianship is outstanding. During their various careers\, the musicians have worked and recorded with a vast array of artistes including Roger Taylor\, Brian May\, and Monseratte Caballe. The band also scored a number one hit when they were asked to recreate Queen’s harmonies for “The Real Life” with Fatboy Slim in 2001. \nAs Killer Queen toured into their second decade\, the audiences grew. In 2005 they played Ahoy Stadium\, where the reformed Queen would be performing only a few months later. The next year\, Killer Queen joined forces with Bjorn Again and The Bootleg Beatles for a Waverly Stadium show in Edinburgh. It was this performance that led to the band being selected to represent Queen in a restaged tribute LiveAid concert held by Sir Bob Geldof. Amanda wrote some songs from the experience and released\, “Embrace” in 2012. \nAfter a successful kickstarter project\, she released her first EP called\, “Keeping Hearts” in June 2014. That month she appeared at Ed’s No Name bar in Winona with her group Wildflower as the release event. \nCurrently\, “Better Life” EP is set to be her most poignant work yet; taking her almost 2 years to complete. \nShe has given a yearly performance at the The Mid West Music Festival since its inception\, and in 2015\, she performed on the first day of the Wisconsin music and art festival\, Ashley for the Arts. SUMMARY:Matthew Griswold at Forager Brewing Company
DESCRIPTION:His youth belies the experience that infuses his songwriting and performance. Minnesota native\, Folk/Blues singer-songwriter and\namateur musicologist\, Matthew Griswold\, is currently playing hundreds of his modern day minstrel shows each year. Though a “solo” performer through trade title\, he carries the sound of layered guitars and an array of dynamic vocal themes. Those elements are then supported by a boot strapped foot stomping on a wooden cigar box drum and keeping his signature hypnotic voodoo-ish groove. Griswold’s performances are rugged\, haunting\, howling\, bone-shaking affairs where all of the grit and soul of a man who has seen the\nwar torn battlefields of Iraq\, yet still sought hope after the worst of tragedies\, are brought forth through one voice and one guitar. He confidently leaves his crowds cradled in subtleties\, but rocked by an undeniable presence. Those who witness him live\, will experience a musician who inhabits\, and is inhabited by\, his music as if it were a spiritual transformation allowing all to dance in the dragon’s den. \nHe has crafted an arrangement style of his own (the “Hypnotonic Sacred Blues”)\, which he employs to reinvent well known classics\, traditional standards\, or plug original songs that pay tribute to their Sacred Blue Note lineage. With a well-honed natural talent\, an ego voided work ethic\, and an applied practice of musicology tilting the odds in his favor\, Griswold has become one of the country’s most noted independent working musician/songwriters. He has over ten years of strategic millage marked by thousands of live performances\nand hundreds of intriguing press features\, all while building a dense catalog of works to be preserved by the those he refuses to call\n“fans”\, and more proudly refers to as “Witnesses of a Fellowship”. Griswold has gained both industry notoriety and scholar level respect as an ‘Alt-Folk/Blues’ era music maker\, and while having had many of his original songs and compositions used in various films\, TV\nshows and commercials around the globe through a contract with Universal Music\, no matter where you stand\, you’re never far from someone who has likely been spellbound by his hypnotic rhythms\, tonic blue notes\, and howling edge …. even if unknowingly!

Founder\, composer and keyboardist Mark Vandermyde started migrating from Mozart to Miles in middle school\, studied composition at Harvard\, and assembled a group of top-notch musicians to bring to life his vision of creating tunes that are interesting\, accessible and fun; serious music that doesn’t take itself too seriously. The group was named to the StarTribune’s Best of Minnesota list (“Best Jazz Act For People Bored With Jazz”) and recently released their third CD “Dreamers Drive”. The combination of vibes and bass is a unique one\, and interesting to both jazz aficionados as well as those not as familiar with the jazz tradition. \nKevin is a retired Northwest Airlines pilot\, who made a living in a previous life (before getting his wings)\, playing bass in places like Dallas\, Texas\, and Kona\, Hawaii. Dave is the jazz band director at St. Olaf College\, and performs all over the Twin Cities metro area with a variety of different groups and genres. \nThe duo has played annually at the summer Bridge Chamber Festival in Northfield\, at venues such as St. Olaf College\, Carleton College and the Grand Theater. The group has been performing on Twin Cities stages for 4 years\, and has toured the Midwest and appeared on music series at Drake University\, the Eau Clair Jazz festival\, and the Twin Cities Jazz Festival. The ensemble is currently in post-production of a CD/Music App release of all original compositions. That product will be released in October\, 2018. The quartet will include Steve Kenny (flumpet)\, Levi Schwartzberg (vibes)\, Ted Olson (bass)\, and Miguel Hurtado (drums). \nSteve Kenny is active in the Minnesota Jazz community as a Performer\, Composer\, Band Leader\, Producer\, Publisher\, and Curator. He is frequently appearing on various Twin Cities and regional stages playing FLUMPET(tm) while performing in or leading ensembles. He’s prolific as a Jazz composer\, often performing and recording his own original works which have won awards and commissions. Steve is a founding member of ‘the illicit sextet’\, “Group 47”\, “What Would Monk Do?” and his own Quartets\, and he is the creative force behind the production company “illicit Productions”\, which produces well over one hundred live shows a year and has a growing yearly catalog of Jazz CD’s being produced\, released and distributed\, including the successful ‘Twin Cities Jazz Sampler CDs’\, with Volume 3 slated to be released in early 2019.
