DESCRIPTION:Twenty years. On paper\, that’s a pretty long time. Looking back on everything that’s happened\, it seems like only yesterday we were playing our first ever show at Joe Smith’s infamous party house in the summer of 1998. What started out as 5 guys just jamming in basements and garages and having fun together has grown into something very special and unique – something that none of us expected to last 5 years\, let alone 20.\nStarting with that fateful show at Joe’s\, our path led us to playing hundreds of shows at clubs\, rallies\, benefits and parties all over Minnesota and Wisconsin – basically any place or event that would have us – to becoming the de facto House Band at our home away from home\, the North Star Bar.\nGranted\, we never became ‘famous’ and we never ‘got signed’\, but so many other things happened to us that far outweighed things like that.\nOur primary motivation from day one has always been the music and our friends\, and bringing the two together (and of course\, plenty of alcohol). Point being\, the music is what initially drew us all together\, and the friendship and bonds with each other and all of you has kept us going all this time.\nWhile we haven’t been officially ‘active’ for all of these 20 years\, we’ve always felt that it was important to keep the circle together in some form or another\, and staying true to the music and our friends has always kept us coming back for more.\nOn that note\, we’d like to invite you to celebrate “20 years of being Unatural” with us for two glorious shows at the North Star Bar on Thanksgiving weekend\, November 23rd and 24th.\nIf you’ve been to one of our shows in the past\, you know how we roll\, and you know all the crazy shenanigans that always seem to happen. And if you’ve never seen us before\, this is the perfect time to witness the spectacle for yourself.\nUnfortunately\, on a sad note\, our brother and uber-dummer Steve Miller will be unable to play at these shows. In his place will be our great friend\, Radio Edit and Crown Royal Orchestra drum-killer Dustin Madline.\nSo there it is – two nights of fun\, good friends\, even better booze\, and any other cool shit we can come up with. Keep your eyes right here over the coming weeks for further developments as they happen.\nWe’ve made so many memories with all of you. We can’t wait to do it all again!

He injured his hand when helping his dad on the family farm. The physician recommended guitar playing for rehabilitation\, and a few weeks later\, Sampson came home from the music store with a new guitar. His younger brother Brian threw a fit\, and was appeased with a shiny drum set. And so the seeds of Six Mile Grove were planted. The brothers spent years pounding away on their instruments in the kitchen of their great grandmother’s old house\, as well as singing in church with their mom\, an organist and devoted music lover. Soon Brian’s friend Barry\, from across the woods\, wanted to join the noise\, and so his years of piano lessons began paying off. The boys realized they would need a bass player\, put an ad in the paper\, and dug up Dezi Wallace from the “big city” of Austin\, MN\, who arrived courtesy of his mom\, as he did not yet have a driver’s license. \nFast forward 20 years\, and Six Mile Grove has a lot to be proud of. They have weathered the ever changing music scene as a primarily self-managed\, self-produced\, and self-recorded band. Their music has evolved accordingly\, as an organic\, honest voice that has not been tinkered with or tainted by the lure of record labels or flashy music producers. You’re sure to find influences of Minnesota music’s founding fathers; from Bob Dylan to the Jayhawks. Accessible seating available by request. \n\nBad Bad Hats\nPhotos by Zoe Prinds-Flash \nBad Bad Hats is an indie rock band from Minneapolis\, Minnesota. The band consists of Kerry Alexander\, Chris Hoge\, and Connor Davison. Named for a trouble-making character from the Madeline children’s books\, Bad Bad Hats is defined by a balance of sweet and sour. Their music honors classic pop songwriting\, with nods to nineties rock simplicity and pop-punk frivolity. Through it all\, Alexander’s unflinchingly sincere lyrics cut to the emotional heart of things. \nAlexander and Hoge met while attending Macalester College in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. In 2012\, they formed Bad Bad Hats with friend and bassist Noah Boswell\, and began performing around the Twin Cities. That same year\, they were signed by Minneapolis label Afternoon Records. Their 2015 debut album Psychic Reader caught the attention of outlets including The New Yorker\, NPR\, Pitchfork\, and Paste. Since the release of Psychic Reader\, Bad Bad Hats has toured the U.S. extensively\, supporting artists including Margaret Glaspy\, Hippo Campus\, and Third Eye Blind. \nLightning Round\, the band’s second full-length album\, finds Bad Bad Hats more confident and mature than ever. Producer and collaborator Brett Bullion (who also produced Psychic Reader) encouraged the group to record live in the studio\, an approach which pushed the band outside of their comfort zone and lends many songs on the record a loose\, organic feel. There is a vulnerability in this (fluttering tape loops\, a few wrong notes) and it makes the music on the new album feel as honest and unpredictable as Alexander’s lyrics. SUMMARY:Joe Carey at Forager Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Bio\nMinnesota-based singer-songwriter Joe Carey has been making rock and roll noise for over three decades. \nIt all started in St. Paul where\, at the age of 10\, he’d gotten his first guitar as a gift from jolly ol’ Santy Claus. It was an Eddie Van Halen replica out of the annual Sears holiday catalog. At first\, Joe hadn’t a clue how to operate such an instrument but after taking a few lessons here and there and picking up a few tricks from slightly less clueless guitar slingers\, he was soon jamming out three chord pop oldies like “Louie Louie”\, “Wild Thing”\, “Twist and Shout”\, and “La Bamba” with his best friend Roman banging on the drums. Eventually\, Joe’s older brother Jim joined in on keyboards/vocals and before long\, the lads were tearing up St. Paul’s garage\, backyard barbecue\, and school function circuits. This would become a recurring theme for the brothers Carey throughout their junior high\, high school\, and early college years as they graduated from playing parties to coffee houses to bars under various monikers\, both together and separately. \nThen\, in the late 90’s\, the brothers formed a new Twin Cities-based power pop band called Loft. Joe\, in his mid 20’s\, had just returned home from a brief stint living in Colorado\, where he went to “find himself” like everyone else who moves there. As it turned out\, what he found was that he had a knack for songwriting…as well as his own singing voice. Both proved integral in launching the new outfit which would become one of the hardest working bands in the region. \nAfter a few successful years and two albums\, Loft disbanded and Joe and Jim continued to carve their niche in greater Minnesota’s music scene as The Careys\, eventually adding their younger sister Jessica as a third vocalist. In 2003\, Joe released his first solo album Wondervibe and spent the next several years splitting time between The Careys and playing alongside Nick Hensley in Love Songs For Angry Men. During that time\, Joe also began playing as a solo act and developed an interest in producing and engineering. \nIn spring of 2009\, he released his second solo effort Sunflower Soul which he wrote\, produced\, and engineered by himself in his own garage studio…he even played most of the instruments on the indie-rock record which was well-received by music critics statewide. As the late great Tom Hallett put it\, “It’s truly refreshing to hear somebody really be who they are\, say what they want\, and play what they want…Carey is one of those rare artists who can record with nearly the same enthusiasm and gravitas as they do in a live setting\, and more than a few of these pleasant little gems prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt.” – ‘Round The Dial – May 4th\, 2009 \nA few years later\, Joe\, along with local music staples Blair Krivanek (guitar)\, Nick Salisbury (bass)\, and Jordan Carlson (drums)\, formed soulful roots rock band The Chinwaggers…sort of by default. The group had been playing together on and off backing up other singers in the area until Krivanek suggested that they record some of Joe’s new songs. So they started tracking piecemeal at various locations and in 2014\, released the 10-song concept album Wayward Son. \n“Wayward Son\, rings with the energy and swagger of a band of sailors in a crowded Irish pub. The group’s seaworthy rock and folk instrumentals collide with Carey’s raspy\, bombastic vocals and heartfelt lyrics\, all to an intriguing and subtly debaucherous effect. Wayward Son is stylistically diverse\, but big and bold from start to finish.” – KT Lindemann\, Local Current Blog \nNow married to his lovely wife for over a decade and sporting two amazing kiddos\, Joe is still hard at work making music every day. He can be found playing shows throughout the upper Midwest year round\, so keep an eye on his calendar. The Onion’s A.V. Club has this to say about a Joe Carey performance: \n“Carey plays vocal-driven\, guitar-heavy stuff reminiscent of what would happen if The Black Crowes played a friend’s barbecue. It’s upbeat\, driving rock for the kind of folks who say the Foo Fighters are the best thing Dave Grohl has ever done\, and the kind of folks who mean it. That’s the thing to take away from Carey: He knows what he likes\, and that’s what he plays.” \nWise words from a wise allium. \nJoe recently released his third solo album Comeback in January 2017\, which Bill Stieger of St. Paul’s Villager called “a classy recording with well-crafted musicianship and sage lyrics”. Comeback was recorded and co-produced by regional rock legend Rich Mattson at his Iron Range studio Sparta Sound.
