SUMMARY:Joe Carey at Forager Brewery
DESCRIPTION:Bio\nMinnesota-based singer-songwriter Joe Carey has been making rock and roll noise for over three decades. \nIt all started in St. Paul where\, at the age of 10\, he’d gotten his first guitar as a gift from jolly ol’ Santy Claus. It was an Eddie Van Halen replica out of the annual Sears holiday catalog. At first\, Joe hadn’t a clue how to operate such an instrument but after taking a few lessons here and there and picking up a few tricks from slightly less clueless guitar slingers\, he was soon jamming out three chord pop oldies like “Louie Louie”\, “Wild Thing”\, “Twist and Shout”\, and “La Bamba” with his best friend Roman banging on the drums. Eventually\, Joe’s older brother Jim joined in on keyboards/vocals and before long\, the lads were tearing up St. Paul’s garage\, backyard barbecue\, and school function circuits. This would become a recurring theme for the brothers Carey throughout their junior high\, high school\, and early college years as they graduated from playing parties to coffee houses to bars under various monikers\, both together and separately. \nThen\, in the late 90’s\, the brothers formed a new Twin Cities-based power pop band called Loft. Joe\, in his mid 20’s\, had just returned home from a brief stint living in Colorado\, where he went to “find himself” like everyone else who moves there. As it turned out\, what he found was that he had a knack for songwriting…as well as his own singing voice. Both proved integral in launching the new outfit which would become one of the hardest working bands in the region. \nAfter a few successful years and two albums\, Loft disbanded and Joe and Jim continued to carve their niche in greater Minnesota’s music scene as The Careys\, eventually adding their younger sister Jessica as a third vocalist. In 2003\, Joe released his first solo album Wondervibe and spent the next several years splitting time between The Careys and playing alongside Nick Hensley in Love Songs For Angry Men. During that time\, Joe also began playing as a solo act and developed an interest in producing and engineering. \nIn spring of 2009\, he released his second solo effort Sunflower Soul which he wrote\, produced\, and engineered by himself in his own garage studio…he even played most of the instruments on the indie-rock record which was well-received by music critics statewide. As the late great Tom Hallett put it\, “It’s truly refreshing to hear somebody really be who they are\, say what they want\, and play what they want…Carey is one of those rare artists who can record with nearly the same enthusiasm and gravitas as they do in a live setting\, and more than a few of these pleasant little gems prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt.” – ‘Round The Dial – May 4th\, 2009 \nA few years later\, Joe\, along with local music staples Blair Krivanek (guitar)\, Nick Salisbury (bass)\, and Jordan Carlson (drums)\, formed soulful roots rock band The Chinwaggers…sort of by default. The group had been playing together on and off backing up other singers in the area until Krivanek suggested that they record some of Joe’s new songs. So they started tracking piecemeal at various locations and in 2014\, released the 10-song concept album Wayward Son. \n“Wayward Son\, rings with the energy and swagger of a band of sailors in a crowded Irish pub. The group’s seaworthy rock and folk instrumentals collide with Carey’s raspy\, bombastic vocals and heartfelt lyrics\, all to an intriguing and subtly debaucherous effect. Wayward Son is stylistically diverse\, but big and bold from start to finish.” – KT Lindemann\, Local Current Blog \nNow married to his lovely wife for over a decade and sporting two amazing kiddos\, Joe is still hard at work making music every day. He can be found playing shows throughout the upper Midwest year round\, so keep an eye on his calendar. The Onion’s A.V. Club has this to say about a Joe Carey performance: \n“Carey plays vocal-driven\, guitar-heavy stuff reminiscent of what would happen if The Black Crowes played a friend’s barbecue. It’s upbeat\, driving rock for the kind of folks who say the Foo Fighters are the best thing Dave Grohl has ever done\, and the kind of folks who mean it. That’s the thing to take away from Carey: He knows what he likes\, and that’s what he plays.” \nWise words from a wise allium. \nJoe recently released his third solo album Comeback in January 2017\, which Bill Stieger of St. Paul’s Villager called “a classy recording with well-crafted musicianship and sage lyrics”. Comeback was recorded and co-produced by regional rock legend Rich Mattson at his Iron Range studio Sparta Sound.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the Rochester debut of Ghostland Radio at Kathy’s Pub. The band is a Winona based group featuring Bryan Crigler (MoonDawg) on guitar and vocals\, Ingrid Ogren (The Wide Awakes)on violin\, Scott Lochner (The People Brothers Band\, MoonDawg\, Stanton West) on bass and Noah Glenn Short (Noah Short\, Stanton West\, Jaybone Bell and Restless Light) on drums and percussion. The music is spawned from the experiences and life inside the mind of Bryan and then brought to the group to interpret a unified vision of what it might look like to be in Bryan’s head. The music is eclectic much like Bryan and draws from many different genres based in a Bluesy Gypsy Soul Rock Americana setting.

DESCRIPTION:After nearly a decade playing in bands in the Duluth\, MN area\, Ryan Van Slooten released his first official solo album\, “All But My Soul”\, in 2010\, and hasn’t looked back since. Now a resident of the Twin Cities area\, since 2013\, he is quickly establishing a larger following. Currently\, Ryan is working on his fourth album\, the follow up to 2013’s award winning “Victory March”. His combination of rock\, pop\, and alternative is\, as Duluth News Tribune reviewer Tony Bennett put it\, “Expertly written and recorded stuff that fans of John Mayer or Goo Goo Dolls might enjoy'”. \nNever one to back down from a challenge\, Van Slooten has always taken a hands on\, do it yourself approach to making music. A self taught guitarist\, pianist\, drummer\, vocalist\, and recording engineer\, his roles are ever changing and expanding. “I get that from my dad”\, Van Slooten says. “Growing up\, he was always tinkering around with something\, or building something from scratch. He wasn’t afraid to roll up his sleeves and challenge himself. It absolutely inspired me to do the same\, it still does.” \nThose efforts have not gone unnoticed\, as the aforementioned album “Victory March” was voted 2013 Album of the Year by PerfectDuluthDay.com\, a nationally recognized blog based out of Duluth. In addition to that\, Van Slooten was 1 of 4 finalists in the Duluth-Superior Symphony Orchestra’s ‘Bridge Sessions’ competition in the fall of 2015\, where classical musicians collaborated with mainstream artists and bands. Paired with concert master and lead violinist Erin Aldridge\, the event inspired them to continue working beyond the competition\, as Erin has become a member of Ryan’s backing band.

She has performed at venues across the USA and in Europe. She has been a first violinist with the Rochester Symphony Orchestra since 2011. Ms. Lamb was a recipient of the 2016/2017 Emerging Artist Grant through the Southeastern Minnesota Arts Council and was selected as the Minnesota Public Radio Class Notes Artist for Rochester\, 2013/2014. An enthusiastic educator for over a decade\, Ms. Lamb currently owns and runs KML Violin & Viola Studio in Rochester\, MN. Kathleen Lamb holds a Bachelor of Music in Violin Performance from the San Francisco Conservatory of Music. \nSteven Pelky\, cello \nDr. Pelkey is currently teaching cello and bass at St. Mary’s University in Winona. This year he will also conduct the Winona State University orchestra and teach bass. Dr. Pelkey is the former artistic director of the Southeastern Minnesota Youth Orchestras and conductor of the Philharmonic Orchestra. His private studio currently consists of violin\, viola\, cello and bass students. He has taught strings in grades three through twelve in the public-school system. His undergraduate degree is from Northwestern University. He has also earned his Masters degree from Yale University and his doctorate from the University of Houston in Texas. He performs regularly with the Rochester Chamber Music Society and is a sub for the Rochester Symphony Orchestra. \nKERRI MULCARE ART \nKerri Mulcare is an artist living and working in Minneapolis\, MN. Her work explores themes such as relationships\, memory\, language and time through printmaking\, book arts and collage. She is interested in investigating the ‘book’ as a functional\, narrative-based object\, but also as a work that can transport the viewer. The intimacy a book creates via the paper or material surface\, linking the hands of the maker and the hands of the viewer\, is a quite an inspiring relationship. She likes to create work that synthesizes my experience into a form that one can look at\, as both an exploration and archive of self\, as well as her experiences within the world. \nHer ongoing series\, Lost & Found\, as well as some recent artist books and collages\, are explorations of memory and the loss of personal histories\, in addition to the moments we choose to preserve through photography and imagery.
