DESCRIPTION:During the Castle’s Grand Opening in February 2019\, Castle Community and Threshold Arts dedicated the Castle’s third floor event hall to Les Fields – one of Rochester’s most iconic musicians who has been bringing some of the best jazz musicians in Southeast Minnesota together for more than fifty years. Threshold Arts hosts a monthly series\, Jazz in Les Fields Hall\, featuring Les Fields and the Turkey River All Stars and a visiting guest band. \nDoors open: 1:00 PM\nLes Fields & the Turkey River All Stars: 1:30 PM\nLaSonya Natividad: 2:40 PM\nAll Ages – General Admission  \nTickets: $5 in advance / $8 day of show \n\n\n\n\nLES FIELDS AND THE TURKEY RIVER ALL STARS\nLes Fields & the Turkey River All-Stars \nNamed after the river that ran through his Cresco\, Iowa hometown\, Les organized the Turkey River All Stars Band in 1968. The group has had some high-profile gigs over those many years\, including performing as the welcoming band for five U.S. Presidents: Richard Nixon\, Ronald Reagan\, Jimmy Carter\, George Bush\, Sr. and George Bush\, Jr.\, and one presidential hopeful\, Ross Perot. The Rochester group was the official Minnesota band at the 1984 World’s Fair in New Orleans. In 2005\, the group was named to the Minnesota Music Hall of Fame. \n\n\n\n\n\n\n\nLASONYA NATIVIDAD\nLasonya Natividad \nLaSonya Natividad is a Rochester Minnesota based vocal artist hailing from the great state of Louisiana. Her unique sound is a blend of southern gospel and jazz influences. She has vocal range from mezzo soprano to contralto. Some of her vocal influences include the God Mother of Jazz Ella Fitzgerald\, Etta James\, India Arie\, Jill Scott and Mahalia Jackson \nShe received her music beginning in the church at age six; and singing her first solo in the 3rd grade: THE STAR SPANGLED BANNER. She went on to sing in high school in the school choir and for competition in both the girl’s vocal and chorus categories on the regional and state level earning her a superior rating and scholarships to LSU in music. \nLittle know fact is she dabbled in playing the bass clarinet and bass drum (it’s all about that bass) in high school  for concert and marching band respectively. Senior year she was granted the mantel of drum major. \nShe continued singing in various community gospel choirs at the local level until college where she took a break from singing except for special occasions to focus on establishing her medical career. \nFinally In 2003 she moved to Rochester Minnesota where she could get back to her first love\, of singing where it all began\, back in church where she became the praise and worship leader and choir director of Vision Church. Shortly thereafter\, she began singing for charity events where she caught the attention of a local musician and owner of Spectrum Audio\, Daniel Van Hook who encouraged her year after year to get involved in the local music scene while providing sound guidance at many of the charity events she sang. \nPerhaps  her fastest move wasn’t soon enough because he took it upon himself to introduce her to Mike King a local guitarist by bringing him to one of her performances.  And the rest is history…She went on to sing for competition in Rochester’s Got Talent competition in 2009 earning her 1st runner up and becoming the leading lady with the Jazz Ensemble of 2 O’clock jump whose members include Mike Sloane\, Mike King\, Dave Townsend and Miles Johnston. \nShe made her solo debut with a trio from 2 o’clock jump at Canadian Honker Restaurant. The following year she partnered with the talented Maurice Toussaint for the annual Juneteenth Festival where they both caught the eye of the band leader of KnuFunk Doug Porter.  Later that same year\, she collaborated with Doug and Maurice for a stellar performance at the NAACP annual fundraiser banquet. Their love of music kept them together reigniting the band KnuFunk where she has gone on to perform at countless venues in Rochester and surrounding areas. \nShe has collaborated with many of the amazingly talented artist in SE Minnesota area including Annie Mack\, Alex Rossi\, John Sievers of the D’Sievers\, Suite\, Dianna Parks\, After School Special and many others. Most recently\, she collaborated with timeless band Incognito to honor the Queen of Soul Aretha Franklin and Tony Fuel recording her first musical solo project with his deep Soul house music sounds.

Minnesota region and beyond for performing hard hitting swing tunes\, along with gentle ballads and bossa novas.  For their set at The Castle listeners can expect a mix of recognizable jazz standards along with some energetic original compositions reflecting a wide range of styles. \nIn addition to John Paulson on sax and flute\, Dr. Paulson’s quartet for the performance at The Castle May 12th includes the stellar Twin Cities guitarist Scott Gerry;  drummer Miles Johnston- well known throughout the Rochester area; and La Crosse bassist Terry Grosskopf who has performed with a variety of professional jazz groups in the region plus touring with the Guy Lombardo orchestra. \nJohn Paulson started his musical journey in Rochester\, MN when he began playing sax at age 10.  He fondly remembers attending many teen dances at the Rochester Armory which is now The Castle. His interest led to playing in area rock bands as well as continuing with school music groups. He eventually migrated west and got his B.M and M.M from the University of Utah and later completed his DMA in music education from the University of Washington.  He studied flute and clarinet with members of the Utah Symphony and the L.A. Chamber Orchestra and studied jazz improvisation with Garry Dial in New York. After 35 years of full time teaching\, Dr. Paulson retired from Saint Mary’s University and taught part at Winona State for the last 5 years. As a freelance artist\, he has performed with The Cab Calloway Orchestra\, Mel Torme\, Andy Williams\, Bob Hope\, The Temptations\, Johnny Mathis\, Pioneer Memorial Theatre and The Repertory Dance Theatre in Salt Lake City. He is widely published and has produced 5 jazz quintet CDs and 2 big band recordings of his own music.  The 2nd John Paulson Big Band CD “Five Years On” was just selected as one of the top 10 big band CD’s of 2018 by KBEM-FM jazz radio in Mpls.  Much of this music was performed by the JP Big Band at Mayo High in Rochester marking 50 years since he graduated from his alma mater. \nVisit paulsonjazz.com for more information.

The band is led by Ken Bloom on Trombone and vocals and also includes Dr. Dan Barr (piano)\, Dr. Frank Bures (clarinet)\, Mike Snustead (trumpet)\, Fred Dodd (banjo)\, Steve Kulas (drums)\, Time Gleason (tuba)\, and Margaret Cassidy (washboard and vocals). The band concentrates on traditional jazz emanating from New Orleans. With the three man front of trumpet\, clarinet and trombone\, and a rhythm section composed of banjo\, piano\, drums\, and tuba\, they strive to bring alive music made famous by Louie Armstrong\, Kid Ory\, and Bix Beiderbecke. Female vocals round out the sound of many Gate City numbers. Members of the band have performed in Europe\, Canada\, and Korea. The band has a standing monthly gig at Jefferson Pub and Grill in Winona. \nThe band has been part of festivals that celebrate steamboats\, fish\, flowers\, and the 4th of July\, and they’ve played at everything from funerals to football games\, but their forte is Mardi Gras Beads and second line umbrellas.

Now based in Minneapolis\, the band has evolved to full maturity\, a potent force propelled by drummer Ian Prince and the most recent addition to the band\, bassist Greg Norton (formerly of Hüsker Dü). In naming the band\, Virock saluted one of his favorite bands\, Echo and the Bunnymen\, and his songcraft and musical sensibilities swirl the Bunnymen and other New Wavers along with 1960s British psychedelica purveyors (especially Syd Barrett) and 1970s classic rockers. The result is muscular and edgy\, infused with melodicism and angular guitar work that puts the band in a class with Queens of the Stone Age and Swervedriver. \nThe band has released two full-length albums (2009’s “The Trouble With You” and 2012’s “The Sensation of Being Somebody”) along with multiple singles and two EPs\, the most recent (“Carrier Wave”) recorded with the iconic Steve Albini. Virock’s songs have been heard in television shows including “The Real World\,” “Best Ink\,” and “The Challenge\,” and the band has opened for the Meat Puppets\, Mission of Burma\, Shiner and The Life and Times. He injured his hand when helping his dad on the family farm. The physician recommended guitar playing for rehabilitation\, and a few weeks later\, Sampson came home from the music store with a new guitar. His younger brother Brian threw a fit\, and was appeased with a shiny drum set. And so the seeds of Six Mile Grove were planted. The brothers spent years pounding away on their instruments in the kitchen of their great grandmother’s old house\, as well as singing in church with their mom\, an organist and devoted music lover. Soon Brian’s friend Barry\, from across the woods\, wanted to join the noise\, and so his years of piano lessons began paying off. The boys realized they would need a bass player\, put an ad in the paper\, and dug up Dezi Wallace from the “big city” of Austin\, MN\, who arrived courtesy of his mom\, as he did not yet have a driver’s license. \nFast forward 20 years\, and Six Mile Grove has a lot to be proud of. They have weathered the ever changing music scene as a primarily self-managed\, self-produced\, and self-recorded band. Their music has evolved accordingly\, as an organic\, honest voice that has not been tinkered with or tainted by the lure of record labels or flashy music producers. You’re sure to find influences of Minnesota music’s founding fathers; from Bob Dylan to the Jayhawks.
