DESCRIPTION:In a world where words like “legend” get thrown around entirely too lightly\, it’s good to know that there are a few people still worthy of the word’s original intent. And when it comes to music in Iowa\, Joe Price stands as one of the art’s legendary practitioners. \nArmed with a joyous\, disarming demeanor and the ability to play the doors off most anyone else in the room\, Price has opened for the likes of Iris Dement and John Lee Hooker\, while Iowa’s own Greg Brown calls Price “the Buddha.” Brown isn’t alone in his praise\, as a litany of Iowa musicians list Price as one of their influences. \nPrice’s reputation was cemented in the 1970’s\, when he spent the latter half of the decade as part of Mother Blues\, one of the greatest and most heavily influential Iowa blues bands of all time. It was a time when Price was playing nearly non-stop\, and developed the style that has made him such a memorable performer. \nAnd make no mistake\, Price certainly is memorable. Head down while he plays\, big ball cap covering his eyes from the crowd while he plies his trade\, feet tapping out the time as his hands work those six strings like their on autopilot. Price isn’t the kind of artist you “think” you’ve seen play; once you’ve been taken to church by that slide\, it stays with you. \nBut no man lives by bread alone\, and Price has two great loves in his life. It’s the rare man that gets to mix two passions together and make a life out of it\, but Vicki Price makes that easy. The pair married in 1987\, but Vicki had been holding her own in the wilds of small-town Iowa before then. Her guitar playing has more structure to it than Joe’s\, while her voice provides a good deal of their songs fire. \nBold and brassy when she wants to be\, Vicki’s voice has elicited visions of Loretta Lynn or June Carter\, but she’s able to get far bluesier than any of her most obvious comparisons. This duo is far more than the sum of their impressive parts: it is when these two take the stage together that the genuine magic happens. \nJoe’s deep love and admiration for his wife is obvious from the moment she joins him on stage—something that can happen at any point during a set; he beckons her with “You Are My Sunshine”—and the amount of fun they clearly have performing with one another elevates their performances\, transforming them from something that blues purists and guitar fans can appreciate\, into something that everyone with ears and a love of life can understand and tap along to. \nJoe and Vicki are both members of the Iowa Blues Hall of Fame. Their 2009 album “Rain or Shine” won the Independent Music Award for best Blues CD of the year. Joe is also a member of the Iowa Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and was a finalist in the International Blues Challenge. \nThe couple released a slew of solo CD’s on seminal Iowa label Trailer Records\, including “25 Below” (Joe\, 1996)\, “Mississippi Summer” (Vicki\, 1998)\, “Request” (Joe\, 1999)\, “Designated Drive” (Joe\, 2000) and “Looking for Love” (Vicki\, 2005). After Trailer closed up shop\, the pair released 2008’s “A Brand New Place” and 2009’s “Rain or Shine” independently. The latter two albums were both lavished with critical praise\, but the pair may have just saved their best work for their most recent album\, “Night Owls.” Featuring both Joe and Vicki throughout\, “Night Owls” is the Price’s music at its fullest\, most memorable and most fun. \nWhether you are seeing them for the first time or the 100th\, whether it’s live or via one of their albums\, experiencing Joe and Vicki Price is an experience worth having\, worth sharing\, and easy to love. DESCRIPTION:Schoepp and his band\, The Shades\, released their national debut\, Run\, Engine\, Run\, on SideOneDummy Records in September 2012. Rolling Stone premiered the album’s title track\, Run\, Engine\, Run\, on September 11. The song\, a tribute to the Schoepps’ grandpa and his 1964 Mercedes Benz\, was also featured on the NPR’s Car Talk\, Michael Feldman’s Whad’Ya Know?.[1] \nSince the album’s initial release on Good Land Records in November 2011\, the band has toured alongside The Wallflowers\, Old 97’s\, The Jayhawks\, Soul Asylum\, Tommy Stinson\, Social Distortion\, The Reverend Peyton’s Big Damn Band\, Frank Turner\, Cory Chisel and The Wandering Sons. \nIn 2016\, the band signed to Xtra Mile Recordings and released their second album\, Rangers and Valentines on April 1st. Relix declared it a “mini masterpiece” and it was named one of Billboard’s “Best of the Week.” \nIn 2017\, Schoepp released Bay Beach Amusement Park – a six-song concept album based on the site of Elvis Presley’s favorite rollercoaster\, the Zippin Pippin. The band commemorated the album with a performance of it at the amusement park in Green Bay\, Wisconsin\, as well as nationwide tours with Ha Ha Tonka and BoDeans. “The Scat” became the theme song for the Onion’s inaugural podcast “A Very Fatal Murder.”

DESCRIPTION:Bio\nMinnesota-based singer-songwriter Joe Carey has been making rock and roll noise for over three decades. \nIt all started in St. Paul where\, at the age of 10\, he’d gotten his first guitar as a gift from jolly ol’ Santy Claus. It was an Eddie Van Halen replica out of the annual Sears holiday catalog. At first\, Joe hadn’t a clue how to operate such an instrument but after taking a few lessons here and there and picking up a few tricks from slightly less clueless guitar slingers\, he was soon jamming out three chord pop oldies like “Louie Louie”\, “Wild Thing”\, “Twist and Shout”\, and “La Bamba” with his best friend Roman banging on the drums. Eventually\, Joe’s older brother Jim joined in on keyboards/vocals and before long\, the lads were tearing up St. Paul’s garage\, backyard barbecue\, and school function circuits. This would become a recurring theme for the brothers Carey throughout their junior high\, high school\, and early college years as they graduated from playing parties to coffee houses to bars under various monikers\, both together and separately. \nThen\, in the late 90’s\, the brothers formed a new Twin Cities-based power pop band called Loft. Joe\, in his mid 20’s\, had just returned home from a brief stint living in Colorado\, where he went to “find himself” like everyone else who moves there. As it turned out\, what he found was that he had a knack for songwriting…as well as his own singing voice. Both proved integral in launching the new outfit which would become one of the hardest working bands in the region. \nAfter a few successful years and two albums\, Loft disbanded and Joe and Jim continued to carve their niche in greater Minnesota’s music scene as The Careys\, eventually adding their younger sister Jessica as a third vocalist. In 2003\, Joe released his first solo album Wondervibe and spent the next several years splitting time between The Careys and playing alongside Nick Hensley in Love Songs For Angry Men. During that time\, Joe also began playing as a solo act and developed an interest in producing and engineering. \nIn spring of 2009\, he released his second solo effort Sunflower Soul which he wrote\, produced\, and engineered by himself in his own garage studio…he even played most of the instruments on the indie-rock record which was well-received by music critics statewide. As the late great Tom Hallett put it\, “It’s truly refreshing to hear somebody really be who they are\, say what they want\, and play what they want…Carey is one of those rare artists who can record with nearly the same enthusiasm and gravitas as they do in a live setting\, and more than a few of these pleasant little gems prove it beyond a shadow of a doubt.” – ‘Round The Dial – May 4th\, 2009 \nA few years later\, Joe\, along with local music staples Blair Krivanek (guitar)\, Nick Salisbury (bass)\, and Jordan Carlson (drums)\, formed soulful roots rock band The Chinwaggers…sort of by default. The group had been playing together on and off backing up other singers in the area until Krivanek suggested that they record some of Joe’s new songs. So they started tracking piecemeal at various locations and in 2014\, released the 10-song concept album Wayward Son. \n“Wayward Son\, rings with the energy and swagger of a band of sailors in a crowded Irish pub. The group’s seaworthy rock and folk instrumentals collide with Carey’s raspy\, bombastic vocals and heartfelt lyrics\, all to an intriguing and subtly debaucherous effect. Wayward Son is stylistically diverse\, but big and bold from start to finish.” – KT Lindemann\, Local Current Blog \nNow married to his lovely wife for over a decade and sporting two amazing kiddos\, Joe is still hard at work making music every day. He can be found playing shows throughout the upper Midwest year round\, so keep an eye on his calendar. The Onion’s A.V. Club has this to say about a Joe Carey performance: \n“Carey plays vocal-driven\, guitar-heavy stuff reminiscent of what would happen if The Black Crowes played a friend’s barbecue. It’s upbeat\, driving rock for the kind of folks who say the Foo Fighters are the best thing Dave Grohl has ever done\, and the kind of folks who mean it. That’s the thing to take away from Carey: He knows what he likes\, and that’s what he plays.” \nWise words from a wise allium. \nJoe recently released his third solo album Comeback in January 2017\, which Bill Stieger of St. Paul’s Villager called “a classy recording with well-crafted musicianship and sage lyrics”. Comeback was recorded and co-produced by regional rock legend Rich Mattson at his Iron Range studio Sparta Sound.
