While buried in the business that is owning a restaurant\, he found time to play live music and create songs like “Down On Broadway” that tell of the late nights that follow a long day of work\, and the winding down that takes place afterwards. Using the peaceful vessel of a long drive\, Clay gracefully takes us through his journey showcasing the importance of family and relationships in his more recent songs “Show Me State” and “Call My Bluff”. Clay has a knack for writing clever and simple lines that are both approachable and memorable. We experience that first hand in the song “28 Days”. This album takes us back to the great American folk singers of yesteryear with a modern indie-pop twist; think John Prine meets Dawes. What would you celebrate\, and what would you change? \nFor Lissie\, her past—the last decade or so\, to be specific—is something still very much alive and open to interpretation and rephrasing. With the approaching release of When I’m Alone: The Piano Retrospective\, the singer is poised to show listeners that her past is hardly static\, that the songs she wrote nearly 10 years ago are still fresh and vibrant\, evoking feelings old and new. \nIn the eyes of the midwestern songstress\, who in recent years made a conscientious return to her roots with the purchase of some 50 acres in northeastern Iowa\, the operative metaphor at work in her career—and in the creation of the retrospective album—is something deeply entropic: gardening. \n“When you garden\,” she says\, thoughtfully\, “it’s like all of the things you eat and grow are beautiful\, and as they die and decompose\, that carnage becomes the food for the plants you grow next year. When you’re out in nature and there’s four seasons\, you see the cycle… It spurs my creativity to see how life becomes death becomes life. It’s this beautiful\, comforting thing because it’s a constant.” \nAnd that entropic beauty shines through in her work on When I’m Alone. When you listen to the lush\, atmospheric arrangements of Lissie’s best-loved\, most career-defining tunes\, you can almost hear the “carnage” of each past moment and remembered feeling coalescing to form this beautiful\, dark tempest of emotion and memory. \nIt’s a thought that should give you pause—when old songs make you feel new things. And that’s exactly what happens all throughout When I’m Alone. From the title track—reworked in a lower key\, Lissie’s voice moving\, breathing with all the strength it had when the original version dropped in 2010\, but with a new sort of power behind it—to the cover of Fleetwood Mac’s hit\, “Dreams\,” you get the sense that Lissie is writing a love letter to her past. And it’s not sad or nostalgic at all\, but mature\, grown-up\, looking backward and forward simultaneously. \nStacking up the 10 original songs on When I’m Alone next to their counterparts from throughout the past decade or so\, the differences are profound. The new arrangements\, written for piano\, are considerate\, quiet\, respectful of their former states. This disparity gives the listener a more complete look back on the arc of Lissie’s songwriting style and canon—the singer sounding more the chanteuse and less the folksy songbird of 10 years past. But we now know these songs are evergreen\, permutable. \nDon’t be lulled into a false sense of security by the idea of a piano-based retread of Lissie’s most accomplished hits\, though. This record is toned down without being buttoned up. These reinterpretations still move in the way the originals do. \nFor Lissie\, the idea behind When I’m Alone came about almost as a test of each tune’s structural integrity.“When you take a song out of its production and strip it down to its basic elements\,” she opines\, “you get the heart of the song. You find out whether it can stand on its own\, whether it’s a good song.When they come down to their basic bones\, are these really meaningful pieces that stand on their own?” \nThe answer here is a resounding “yes—yes they are.” But more than that\, they’re about respecting and appreciating the canon Lissie has crafted\, along with the emotions and moments that went into writing each song. \n“The reason I started writing songs when I was younger was this urgent\, pressing need of ‘this is how I process my experiences and my emotions\,’” she says. Writing and playing songs rooted in the “Minnesota Sound.” \nColin Campbell (vocals/guitar)\, his older brother Cameron (bass)\, and younger brother Evan (Drums/miscellaneous screaming) are living double lives as an indie rock band as well as a blues band. The Shackletons have been generating buzz throughout the Twin Cities area and released their video for their hit “Minnesota Girls” on 89.3 The Current. \n  \n  \n\n\n\nWatch\n \n\n\nListen\n \n\n\n\nHair of the Dog\nHair of the Dog \nHair of the Dog consists of Tracy Sonnier (acoustic guitar/vocals)\, Jeremy Jewell (electric guitar/vocals)\, Mike Nesbit (bass)\, Erik Henriksson (drums/electric guitar/vocals). The musicians are long-time fixtures on the local scene\, both as solo performers and with other bands. In late 2014\, they found themselves band-less and looking for new people to play with. They discovered through playing together that the blend of their individual styles made for a very interesting and eclectic sound. They unveiled this sound to the public at their first public appearance together on New Year’s Eve\, December 31\, 2014. A local music reviewer described the band as “vintage rock.” The show went over so well that they quickly were offered other gigs around town and have played just about every venue available since\, including Kathy’s Pub\, North Star Bar\, The Half Barrel\, The Tap House\, The Doggery\, Forager Brewery and many others\, as well as local music festivals and block parties such as Eco Fest and Social Ice. \nEach band member brings their own distinct musical taste and background to the picture which results in a very organic\, rootsy style that is hard to pinpoint by using any specific genre name. The band consists of Kerry Alexander\, Chris Hoge\, and Connor Davison. Named for a trouble-making character from the Madeline children’s books\, Bad Bad Hats is defined by a balance of sweet and sour. Their music honors classic pop songwriting\, with nods to nineties rock simplicity and pop-punk frivolity. Through it all\, Alexander’s unflinchingly sincere lyrics cut to the emotional heart of things. \nAlexander and Hoge met while attending Macalester College in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. In 2012\, they formed Bad Bad Hats with friend and bassist Noah Boswell\, and began performing around the Twin Cities. That same year\, they were signed by Minneapolis label Afternoon Records. Their 2015 debut album Psychic Reader caught the attention of outlets including The New Yorker\, NPR\, Pitchfork\, and Paste. Since the release of Psychic Reader\, Bad Bad Hats has toured the U.S. extensively\, supporting artists including Margaret Glaspy\, Hippo Campus\, and Third Eye Blind. \nLightning Round\, the band’s second full-length album\, finds Bad Bad Hats more confident and mature than ever. Producer and collaborator Brett Bullion (who also produced Psychic Reader) encouraged the group to record live in the studio\, an approach which pushed the band outside of their comfort zone and lends many songs on the record a loose\, organic feel. There is a vulnerability in this (fluttering tape loops\, a few wrong notes) and it makes the music on the new album feel as honest and unpredictable as Alexander’s lyrics. He also delved into character profiles\, both fictional and based on real-life experiences\, stories McPherson has held onto but never thought of as fodder for songwriting\, such as the Las Vegas bus station interlude detailed in “Style (Is a Losing Game).” \n“That seems like a pretty normal thing for a singer-songwriter to do\, to write about personal experience\, but I really have never done that\,” McPherson says. “It felt great but it also was tough at the same time. The thing is\, John Henry is trying to beat the machine because he’s in awe of it. It was a lot of me saying\, ‘You’re really good at this\, and I have a hard time doing it.’” \nWith a group of soul-baring tracks taking shape\, McPherson and crew scheduled studio time to help force the issue. It quickly became apparent that these sessions were not going to work\, bringing McPherson’s momentum to a halt. \nTo clear his head\, he flew to Los Angeles at the invitation of friend and longtime supporter Josh Homme of Queens of the Stone Age\, who was also recording at the time. McPherson\, Homme\, and his Queens bandmate Dean Fertita played around with some songs\, with Homme pushing McPherson outside of his comfort zone in a no-stakes environment. \n“His thing was\, ‘I’m going to throw all kinds of crap onto your songs that you’re not going to want to hear\, and you’re going to play ridiculous stuff you wouldn’t normally do\,’ and Dean was kind of the calming presence\,” McPherson says. \nMcPherson calls the getaway “the most fun I’ve had since I was 15 years old” and returned to Nashville with a clear head\, internal filters successfully stifled\, ready to move forward. \nThat fresh perspective in tow\, McPherson learned that the long-shot “backup” studio\, the legendary RCA Studio B in Nashville\, was willing to host his band for the making of the record. RCA Studio B was fundamental to the creation of the “Nashville Sound\,” and the ghosts of some of the greatest songs in history live within its walls: Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You\,” and Elvis Presley’s “Are You Lonesome Tonight?” among them. \nArtists who choose to record at Studio B are met with a rigorous list of requirements\, including using a recording method appropriate during the studio’s heyday. Since the studio is a working museum by day\, the entirety of McPherson’s workspace had to be reset at night: Load in all equipment in the late afternoon\, work until 3:00 or 4:00 a.m.\, and leave no trace nightly. Repeat. Repeat. Repeat. \n“Those rules would probably turn a lot of bands off\, but they turned us on\, 100 percent\,” McPherson says. “I really love walking into a classic studio as much as I love getting my hands on a really old guitar. I like knowing that something was used for a long time and has good things in it.” \nBut this isn’t an old Nashville record\, by any measurement\, nor is it the record McPherson set out to make\, with credit due to co-producer Dan Molad (also the drummer for Lucius). \n“There’s a pretty broad gap in our tastes\, what we do and what we’re into\,” McPherson says. Where he’s as likely to lean on The Cramps as he is Irma Thomas for inspiration\, Molad’s left-field production suggestions included a Casio synthesizer and running a Fender Rhodes through a tape delay. (McPherson nixed the former; the latter became the signature sound of one of the record’s tracks.) “We ended up learning a lot from each other\, and he did a lot of stuff I’d have never thought to do.” \nDuring the song “Let’s Get Out of Here While We’re Young\,” JD sputters the line “We’ve worn out all the songs we’ve sung.” This is not a statement McPherson takes lightly. \n“This record was difficult for me to make\, difficult to write\, difficult to record. The band consists of Kerry Alexander\, Chris Hoge\, and Connor Davison. Named for a trouble-making character from the Madeline children’s books\, Bad Bad Hats is defined by a balance of sweet and sour. Their music honors classic pop songwriting\, with nods to nineties rock simplicity and pop-punk frivolity. Through it all\, Alexander’s unflinchingly sincere lyrics cut to the emotional heart of things. \nAlexander and Hoge met while attending Macalester College in Saint Paul\, Minnesota. In 2012\, they formed Bad Bad Hats with friend and bassist Noah Boswell\, and began performing around the Twin Cities. That same year\, they were signed by Minneapolis label Afternoon Records. Their 2015 debut album Psychic Reader caught the attention of outlets including The New Yorker\, NPR\, Pitchfork\, and Paste. Since the release of Psychic Reader\, Bad Bad Hats has toured the U.S. extensively\, supporting artists including Margaret Glaspy\, Hippo Campus\, and Third Eye Blind. \nLightning Round\, the band’s second full-length album\, finds Bad Bad Hats more confident and mature than ever. Fresh off his latest tour with Prof\, Mac Irv will be making a return to Rochester having last been here for Find Elysium IV a little over a year ago. He’s recently released a new single which you can check out below. Joining Irv will be local hip hop heavyweights\, The Bando Bunch\, and St. Paul’s own Nimic Revenue. Rounding out the show will be Jae Havoc and Hells Paradise. Live DJs will be spinning in between sets and we can’t forget to mention our host\, Lil Crazed! Not sure we’ve ever seen him hold a mic and not spit a few bars\, so if you’ve been waiting to catch Lil Crazed\, now’s your chance! \n\nMac Irv\n \nSome stories birthed and illustrated in the hood never leave city limits. And for some\, music is more than just an outlet. It’s an escape. Born and raised in North Minneapolis\, Mac Irv’s gift for rhyming began at an early age\, most of which he learned from his grandfather along with living across the street from Cornbread Harris\, father of Grammy award winning producer Jimmy Jam. At 9 years old\, Mac Irv started a rap group and was making rhymes in his basement. \nHis gift for music went undisclosed for many years as his talent for basketball required a full commitment. After receiving a scholarship to the University of Minnesota\, Mac Irv exceeded athletic expectations\, placing him as an All-Big Ten Player from 2006-2008. Graduating with a degree in Business Marketing\, the Gopher player’s athletic ability was unknowingly deteriorating slowly. His professional career overseas was eventually cut short after a serious hip injury. Shortly after at the age of 25\, Mac Irv became a father to a baby girl. Despite battling depression while simultaneously taking on new responsibilities of parenthood\, Mac Irv’s passion for music was soon reignited. \nWith support from his Pilot Life Team Tre Adams and producer Willie Wonka\, Mac Irv developed smooth\, quick rap lines and metaphors reflecting his experience on the Northside\, the ups and downs of relationships\, and lessons extracted from sports. Things quickly progressed and his career as an artist was solidifying. \n“Got Me Open” was released on Youtube as his first single\, but it was “Hometown” that allowed him to ultimately represent for Minnesota\, embodying the nickname\, “Hometown Hero”. In 2014\, Mac Irv toured with Rhymesters artist Prof and his single “The Cycle” was nationally featured on MTV Jams. During that same year\, Irv was selected to perform at Soundset\, in company with Nas\, Wiz Khalifa\, and 2 Chainz. Mac Irv recently finished another tour run with Prof and has a new single “Maintain” that’s found radio play. You can watch the video below. \nContinuing to be a voice for his community\, his loyalty for Minneapolis is undimmed. After several projects and local shows consistently selling out\, Mac Irv’s ambitions brought him to perform at South by Southwest. His mixtape\, “Sincerely Mac Irv” was featured on DatPiff and received an immense amount of feedback from his fans – which are known as his “fam base”. \nExposing disparities in his neighborhood through lyrics\, Mac Irv has earned a place in the Hip Hop arena of Minneapolis. The Bando members are Treezy\, ¥O$A\, TommyBoy\, Sly\, Joey Smoke Break\, Jant\, and Yeti. He began writing creatively at 11 and grew an increasing interest in hip hop by 13\, at which time he started learning how to write songs. Learning quickly that finding beats is a tedious and sometimes expensive process\, he began making music with anything he could get his hands on\, including keyboards\, drum machines\, guitars\, computer software\, etc. By 15 he was producing and recording his own songs\, improving this process over the following years. He played his first show at 17 at Rochester bar\, The Westfire and would continue to indulge in performance. At 18 he met guitarist Kasey Katusky\, who he began jamming with. Soon after Kasey introduced Joe to drummer John “Paco” Hernandez. Later\, finding a bassist (Phil Gunn) they started writing music and playing shows together as the punk rock band “Corporate Failure”. With this influence\, Joe’s solo music benefited and branched out into other styles including soul\, punk\, dubstep and metal. This shows best on his latest releases\, “Kill Scott Heron” (2015) and more recently on his EP “Dark Days x Bright Nights” (2015). \nJoe has also aided in other artists work\, including Minnesota Metal band “AfterTime” and Seattle hip hop artist “Brakebill”. \n\n\n\nWatch\n \n\n\nListen\n \n\n\n\nHells Paradise\n \nAfter having successful solo careers\, Skip and RiXX from King In Disguise Entertainment came together with Bubz and P.
